Litter index shows increase in cleanliness in the Truckee Meadows

Seventeen volunteers surveyed the Truckee Meadows on Tuesday, August 8 as part of the 2006 Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful annual Litter Index. The Litter Index is a national initiative of Keep America Beautiful that provides a starting point for the litter prevention process. The Litter Index is conducted by volunteer teams who rank areas of town on a cleanliness scale of one to four. Keep America Beautiful guidelines signify that a "1" means "virtually no litter can be observed," while a designation of "4" indicates that major illegal dumpsites are present, requiring equipment or extra manpower for removal." The lower the number the lower the amount of litter in the area.

This year’s results showed that the Truckee Meadows was even cleaner than last year with a score of 1.5. According to Christi Cakiroglu, Executive Director of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful “the results are encouraging and indicate that more people are doing every day things to prevent and get rid of litter like securely closing trash can lids, keeping trash out of the back of their pickup trucks, and picking up litter when they go for a walk.” Cakiroglu cautions that "although some of our neighborhoods may be looking cleaner we still have a lot of work to do with our Open Space areas. Transfer station fees are less than the cost of a tank of gas – yet people are still dumping in the hills illegally.” To see how your neighborhood rated this year and in the past visit www.ktmb.org.

Help cleanup the Truckee River

Truckee River Clean-up is Saturday, September 16, 2006. Last year approximately 250 volunteers pulled 7.4 tons of trash from the river. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is working in partnership with Nevada Eco-Net (formerly Environmental Leadership), with support from the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, City of Reno, City of Sparks, Washoe County, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Champions of the Truckee River, Truckee River Yacht Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, REI, dSk, Tahoe Whitewater Tours, Starbucks, Albertsons and Great Basin Brewery to engage over 500 volunteers in this important community event. All volunteers will receive a lunch.

Get to Know Your Neighbor Day

August 26th is “Get To Know Your Neighbor Day” as part of the Conscious Community Campaign. The campaign is a new regional-wide movement for social renewal, that, as part of its mission, encourages creating a purpose driven community that focuses on demonstrating Goodness in our lives. One way to better get to know your neighbor is to organize a cleanup for your neighborhood. For more ideas on how you can better get to know your neighbor visit www.ccbnreno.org.
