The 1st Annual Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup was held on April 22, 2006 at 15 different sites throughout the Truckee Meadows. This event was a HUGE success thanks to approximately 500 volunteers who helped pick up over 77 tons of trash and debris!

A big Thank You goes out to Washoe County, City of Sparks, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, and the City of Reno who provided invaluable financial and logistical support.

Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, August 8, 2006 to survey the Truckee Meadows for the 2006 Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful annual Litter Index. A short orientation and light dinner will be provided for all volunteers at 5:30 p.m. at the KTMB office. Indexing will begin at 6 p.m. and end at approximately 8 p.m.

The Litter Index is a national initiative of Keep America Beautiful that provides a starting point for the litter prevention process. The Litter Index is conducted by volunteer teams who rank areas of town on a cleanliness scale of one to four. Keep America Beautiful guidelines signify that a "1" means "virtually no litter can be observed," while a designation of "4" indicates that major illegal dumpsites are present, requiring equipment or extra manpower for removal." The lower the number the lower the amount of litter in the area.

The Truckee Meadows rated a 1.6 overall during the 2005 Litter Index. Please visit KTMB's website for more information and to view past results.

Truckee River Clean-up is Saturday, September 16, 2006.

Last year approximately 250 volunteers pulled 7.4 tons of trash from the river. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is working in partnership with Nevada Eco-Net (formerly Environmental Leadership) to find even more volunteers for this year’s event.
