2nd Annual Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup

The 2nd Annual Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup was held on May 12, 2007 at 15 different sites throughout the Truckee Meadows. This event was a HUGE success thanks to over 500 volunteers who removed over 144 tons of trash, 1,000 pounds of hazardous waste, 38 cars, and hundreds of tires! This is MORE THAN DOUBLE what was removed last year! A big Thank You goes out to Washoe County, City of Sparks, City of Reno, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, who provided invaluable financial and logistical support. Special thanks to our many sponsors including Solid Waste Reduction, Waste Management, Scolari’s, Hobey’s, the Sun Valley General Improvement District, KNPB Channel 5, New Belgium Brewery, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, 1-800-Got-Junk, Northern Nevada Bluegrass Association, Stout Foundation, Firestone, Valley Hoe, ERGS Properties, Roger Edwards Construction, American Auto Wreckers. . . we couldn't have done it without you!! Hope to see you next year!

Cleanups are only one part of keeping our open spaces clean. Help us prevent illegal dumping in our community! Report any illegal dumping in progress by calling 775.334.COPS. To report an illegal dump site call 775.328.2434. Please do not remove any items from the dump site! Washoe County Sheriff’s Department and Health Department need the dump site intact for evidence purposes.

Army Guard Removes Abandoned Vehicles

On May 19th and 20th the skies were filled with Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters. Attached to these helicopters were abandoned vehicles pulled from Washoe Valley, Sun Valley, and Peavine in a concentrated effort to remove vehicles in our open spaces coordinated by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Nevada National Guard, America Auto Wreckers, Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service, and Washoe County. A total of 27 vehicles were removed. Combined with the vehicles removed from the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup, a total of 65 vehicles were taken out of our open space areas in May.

Help keep abandoned vehicles and other heavy metals out of our open spaces and get paid! American Auto Wreckers will pay you for your vehicle, running or not. Contact them at 775.322.9092. For other heavy metal disposal contact Solid Waste Reduction Services at 775.331.2267.

Helping to Clean Up the Truckee River for a Decade!

The 10th Annual Truckee River Clean-up is set for Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 9 – noon. Last year over 300 volunteers pulled 13 tons of trash from the river and stenciled 60 storm drains to keep future dumping out of the river. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is working in partnership with Nevada Eco-Net, City of Reno, City of Sparks, Washoe County, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada to find even more volunteers for this year’s event. We are still in the planning stages so visit www.ktmb.org for up-to-date information.
