RENO, NV - Over 77 tons of junk and debris was removed from many of our local outdoor recreation area by more than 400 volunteers who braved mud and rain to take part in the Great Truckee Meadows Community Clean-up on Saturday, April 22.
Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful worked with the cities of Sparks and Reno, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Waste Management, and 1.800.GOT.JUNK to coordinate this first-ever collaborative effort to attack illegally dumped trash in recreational areas.
Major support came from a $5,000 Community Events Sponsorship grant awarded by the Washoe County Board of Commissioners and an additional $10,000 from the Washoe County District Health Department.
Other important sponsors include the Sparks Parks & Recreation Department, Sun Valley General Improvement District, Hobey’s Casino-Restaurant, Scolari’s Food and Drug Company, Krispy Kreme, Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery, Starbucks, Blue Moon Printers, the Hills Angels, Reno News and Review, KTHX Radio, the Gannett Foundation, KNPB Channel 5 and many others who helped coordinate and promote this unprecedented event.
The cleanup is part of a long-term, community-based effort to consolidate resources and provide greater stewardship of the region’s natural resources.
