Phone Book Recycling ends December 31

Reno, Sparks, and County Compete for Trees

RENO, NV - For the first time ever, Washoe County's Department of Regional Parks and Open Space, and the Parks and Recreation Departments of the Cities of Reno and Sparks will compete to collect phone books. For every ton of phone books recycled at the following community locations, SBC Smart Yellow Pages will donate 17 trees as a symbol of the number of trees saved through recycling: Bartley Ranch Regional Park, Rancho San Rafael Park, Lazy 5 Regional Park, Alf Sorensen Community Center, Sparks Parks and Recreation Department, Don Mello Sports Complex, Neil Road Recreation Center, Northeast Community Center, Paradise Park, and Moana Pool.

For every 355 Reno/Sparks/Carson City phone books recycled, 17 trees, 6,953 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil and enough landfill space to occupy a Volkswagen Beetle are saved, according to statistics gathered by SBC Smart Yellow Pages. Phone book recycling will end on December 31.

This is the fifteenth annual phone book recycling effort coordinated by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Scolari's Food & Drug Company, SBC Smart Yellow Pages, and Waste Management’s Recycle America. In addition to the community locations above, phone books can be recycled at curbside with regular household recyclables, or at all local Scolari's, Sak 'N Save Food Stores, Recycle America and SBC locations. Residents of rural communities throughout northern Nevada can find out how to recycle outdated phone books in their area by calling 1.800.953.4400.
